Give a 1-2 paragraph description of your research topic. What question are you trying to answer? Is it narrow enough to complete in approximately 5 weeks? Get some ideas down here, and we will continue to refine your research question/topic in class.
I would like to do my research topic on how tattoos are considered part of the American identity/how tattoos affect American society/and how American society treats tattooed individuals. There seems to generally be a negative connotation with older generations of tattooed individuals. However, I have noticed that tattooing/tattooed individuals have become more popular generally in the American culture. We have magazines dedicated to well made artists, and to the taboo culture of the art of getting tattooed. We have shows like Miami Ink, and shows dedicated to showing the art of covering up "bad" tattoos. Over the years names like Kat Von D, and Corey Miller have become well known to houses nation wide thanks to these shows. I think there's a lot more to explore, and that I can definitely complete this assignment in five weeks. There are plenty of subculture books, and some of the artists have their own blogs that I can peruse to get a primary source for my questions.
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting topic, Kim. I think when you start gathering sources you'll be able to narrow it down/focus it a bit.
DeleteI'd like to write about the history of higher education in the United States. I'd contrast institutions in the North and South, describe major movements and pieces of legislation that led to new waves of school building, and compare the growth of various kinds of institutions. (For example, the Morill Land Grant Act led to a boom in schools of veterinary medicine and engineering.) I'd also mention economic events that affected the growth and change of institutions. (Cryogenics were fueled by industry, but could only be studied by large universities. The Panic of 1893 almost killed Stanford.) I'm currently reading a book on physics in the 20th century that I could use, and of course, colleges are more than happy to share their histories in their sites, tours, and literature.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very broad topic that will need more focus, Althea. Try to narrow in on one aspect of the history of higher education. At this point you have an anthology. I just need a 12-15 pager. Let's talk.
DeleteI would like to write about US foreign policy of and military strategic value in the Korean Peninsula, and why the US is now refocusing to that region of the world. In this paper, I would discuss the Korean War, US involvement and alliance with the ROK, nuclear issues with the DPRK, and our increasingly aggressive and competitive relationship with China (economically, cybernetically, and militarily) in that region of the world, and bring this all together to discuss why US should be, and is, taking interest in this region. There are more than enough ongoing debates in both the UN as well as discussions among US foreign policy experts that publish material that I could use to write this paper. I also have a connection to a military adviser in the UN who may be able to assist me with his own knowledge of the subject.
ReplyDeleteGood start, Ben.
DeleteI would like to write my research paper on the evolution of the FBI and how it has helped/'hindered crime solving. In my essay I would discuss how the FBI has evolved since its establishment (1908)-- from assignments, to size, to technology, to departments-- and the effects it has had on crime solving since that time. I plan to go into detail on several examples of instances where the bureau has either helped or hindered an investigation, as well as discuss the pros/cons of federal jurisdiction limitations, the accuracy/inaccuracy of things such as profiling and DNA testing/finger printing, and the variety of crimes the FBI handles (not just terrorism and serial killers). I believe this subject has enough flexibility to allow me to make it as long, or short, as I need to, in order to fill the our page quota, while also not drowning myself in back-story. There are several books on the subject of the FBI, and, more specifically, profiling, as well as the FBI website (http://www.fbi.gov/) and online news articles. I may also be able to incorporate into my paper some information taken directly from a local FBI agent.
ReplyDelete(I am very interested the inner workings of the minds of criminals, and have contemplated on more than one occasion pursuing a career in the FBI, thus I should have no problem maintaining interest for 5 weeks. I also promise to ATTEMPT not to reference "Criminal Minds". I am very much aware it is a TV show, but they do utilize several references who are former agents when planning their episodes.)
Amanda, I like the topic. This needs to be narrowed down a bit though. In the beginning you talk about the early development. This will probably cover most of your paper. Where it starts to get too broad is assessing how it has helped/hindered crime solving. Once you gather sources you will be able to clarify where you want to go with this.
DeleteI had originally wanted to discuss the establishment of the FBI as a whole in a brief section, and then go into the BAU in more detail and discuss the accuracy of profiling, but I didn't think it was broad enoguh... Should I do that instead?
DeleteI am planning on writing about the creation of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and its effect on the United States, along with many other areas of the world. More specifically, I would focus on the original creation of NASA, the space race, its effects foreign relations, along with the many technological advancements that have not only had an effect on the space community but the nation as a whole. There are many resources on NASA, its missions, and technology allowing for me to have a large pool of sources to pull my information from to write this paper. Overall, NASA will be an interesting topic for me to research and write about due to its large effect on nation in not only scientific advancement but in other areas as well such as military advancement and even diplomacy.
ReplyDeleteGood start. I think you'll need to focus on just one of these aspects.
DeleteI am hoping to write about the internet and the ways it has changed the way people interact on a global scale. More specifically, I would focus on the influence of the internet on the scientific community and how it has changed the way research is carried out and how information is shared. I am considering touching on the founding of the internet and the key changes that made it the important part of the modern world it is today. I think that by focusing on the influence of the internet on the scientific community I can successfully write my paper in the five weeks allotted and keep it to a manageable size. There are many resources available on the internet itself and finding information to support my paper should not be an issue.
ReplyDeleteGood topic. How the internet began will be the crux of your research.
DeleteI plan to write about the influence of Miles Davis on American music through his evolution as a musician. I would include notable events in his life in order to explain his artistic diversions throughout his career. I would also mention the great musicians that Davis played with, and talk about their significance to his music. Miles had a very interesting career, starting out as a follower of the BeBop legend Charlie Parker to a releaser of a hip hop album, and it will be interesting to be able to look at how his influences changed the music scene throughout his life. I would cover about 50 years (from about 1940 to about 1990), so there will be plenty of information to include about both him and musicians that influenced him. This is also a fairly specific topic, so points can be able to be made without making massive generalizations that don't do the topic much justice.
ReplyDeleteI wish to write about movies and their influence on popular culture from the 1950's to the present day. Film has a fairly short lifespan compared to other topics, such as photography, and it was created at the precipice of the 20th century, so finding information about it shouldn't be difficult. The early innovators of film in the 1900’s like Auguste and Louis Lumiere, jumped the medium forward significantly in technical terms, but it wasn't until D.W. Griffth introduced the first movie star to the public in the 1930’s, did films truly begin to influence the culture of the world. Examples are plentiful, from Marlon Brando's machismo, tough guy persona bailing out the t-shirt industry, to Marilyn Monroe setting a cultural standard for women in the 1950's and onward. My topic will be confined to about half the lifespan of film and I will focus mainly on major points of interest, such as Some Like It Hot, to emphasize the enormous effect the most popular movies of the time had on American culture. I decided not to include the nascent film industry of the 1930’s and 40’s because, though they included notable characters like Charlie Chaplin, they did not send the same size ripples as movies since that period have. So to summarize all of this—I will only research films from the 50’s to the present day, include only the most influential films, focus primarily on popular culture, rather than technical advancements, and I will only describe the effect of film in the United States.
ReplyDeleteGood, but you'll have to focus on one of these aspects instead of trying to hit such a broad spectrum.
DeleteI would like to write my research paper about women during World War II. The focus of my paper would be the way in which World War II altered the role of women in society. I would discuss the role of women before, during, and after the war. I would compare the role of women during each time period and highlight the differences. I would research specific job opportunities that arose for women during the war. I would discuss how women directly aided the war effort, as well as how their roles changed at home and in the community. Lastly I would include research on the position of women after the war. I would discuss the aspects of their new status that were kept and lost. I would also explain any changes in the way women viewed themselves and were viewed by men. If I research this topic I think I will be able to find plenty of information.
ReplyDeleteGood, Mia. I think it will come together more once you start gathering sources.
DeleteI would like to do my research paper on the Sacco and Vanzetti trial. I would focus on how the prejudices and fear of foreigners influences their trial. I would also focus on the fact that they were anarchist during the Red Scare and how that effected their trial. I would discuss how foreigners, specifically Italians, were viewed in the 1920’s and the biases they faced being immigrants and anarchist in a time when Americans greatly feared foreigners and anarchists. Also, I would discuss how the evidence brought against them, which was mainly circumstantial, and the witness testimony lead to the court finding them guilty and giving them the death sentence. There are a lot of resources that I can use to find information on this trial and I think this topic has information from different point of views, so I can take all of them into consideration when formulating my thesis.
ReplyDeleteGood, Laura. This is very close to what Max Orrock proposed, but I think you two can work off of each other with this. You will come across similar sources and perhaps share them.
DeleteI want to write my paper about the evolution of food in America and its cultural impact on our society. I want to highlight how the food trends of different time periods reflects the social, economic, and cultural changes that were occurring during that era. I would discuss the evolution of early Protestant inspired cuisine to the fast-food empires seen today, and how everything in between parallels the growth and change in America.I would also mention how different foods help to distinguish and define classes, starting with early America and progressing to the food-class divide seen today (For example the cultural and class differences between Whole Foods and McDonald's). There is a lot of information on this topic, such as blogs and newspaper articles, which will help me during my research. In addition, I can use ads and TV shows to back up my claims. I believe I can effectively write this paper in five weeks and cover a good amount of American food history without having to gloss over certain parts.
ReplyDeleteLily, Good topic, but it is a broad one. Try to narrow it down to a particular window of time.
DeleteI would like to write my research paper on the Zodiac Killer and his reign of terror during the late 60's and early 70's. I will talk about how he implemented fear throughout the state of California through his killings, letters, and his ability to remain anonymous. I will talk about the reporter and his obsession with the Zodiac killer and how it led him to write a book about all of the cases. A huge part of the paper will be focused on the fact that the Zodiac Killer was never officially caught. There are a majority of sources I can use to gather information on this topic, such as articles, public case files, movies, and books (including the one the reporter wrote). This topic interests me greatly and I will have no problem maintaining focus for the next 5 weeks.
ReplyDeleteGood.
DeleteI would like to write my research paper on World War Two and the technological advancements that it created. I would compare and contrast the pre and post war economies, and see how the advances of the war effected them. By seeing how the full mobilization of the wartime economy jump starts innovation, I can discover the creation of much of the technology we use today. Another aspect of this topic I could include is how the advances made during the war led to other events like the nuclear arms buildup and the space race. Not only is there a vast amount of credible information on this subject, but it is also a topic I am passionate about and would love to discover more on. I do think that by staying on topic, I will be able to complete this in five weeks, and will not be too broad. One of the most exciting areas of this topic is discovering the creation of many things that we take for granted today, and the effects they had on our country.
ReplyDeleteHi Drew, I would focus on important technological advancements. There are many that will be plenty for this research.
DeleteI would like to write my research paper on the process and importance of the Allied forces cracking Nazi Germany’s Enigma code in WWII. In this paper I will discuss the process in which the code was cracked as well as how this communication breakthrough benefitted the Allied nations during the war. Code communication was a pivotal way of communicating during WWII, and the importance of code breaking became known by the interception of the Zimmerman note in WWI. Furthermore, I will discuss how code communication has changed the face of warfare and how it is used in the present day. If I research this topic I think I will be able to find plenty of information.
ReplyDeleteI would like to write my research paper on the boycott of the 1980 Olympic games. In this paper I will discuss the causes of the 62 nation boycott of the games in Moscow and their effects on the Cold War. This was a period of heightened tension and an event that altered the course of the globe in terms of choices between Democracy and Communism. I hope to examine the intricacies and tensions of the Cold War which were put on display in the 1980 Olympics.
ReplyDeleteGood.
DeleteI would like to write my research paper on the role that sports diplomacy has played in international affairs since World War II. Sports diplomacy has to do with using sports to overcome cultural barriers. Often times men in suits can't solve all of our problems, and we have to leave it to athletes to settle things on the court, rink, or field. I would like to explore how effective athletes have been in accomplishing this through the lens of specific events such as the success of Jesse Owens in the 1936 Olympics in Germany, Richard Nixon's "Ping-pong diplomacy" which helped normalize relations with China, and the victory of the American hockey team over the USSR in the 1980 Olympics. I would also discuss how sports diplomacy has become a regular part of United States policy as we now send out Sports Envoys to establish friendlier relations with other countries.I would also make sure to address any potential shortcomings of sports diplomacy. I know that there are plenty of resources out there for this topic, as I have already seen several books and websites that explore the topic deeply.
ReplyDeleteGood start, Hillman. You may have to choose just one though. We'll see what you can find for resources.
DeleteI would like to research the progression of the mission to capture/kill Osama bin Laden. The majority of my paper would be focused on the CIA's search for his location and respectively his compound through members of al Qaeda but will also contain the actual execution of the mission. I would include failed operations or leads, and also mention the worldwide response to his death. I understand that the capture of UBL was relatively recent, but I have already found a strong amount of sources (books, articles, movies, etc.). Additionally, in regards to this topic, I think it's pretty obvious when an article or book is falsely editorial or conspiratorial. I think this mission is still very current and impactful, and it is something I've been interested in since I knew what happened on 9/11, which is why I think it would provide genuine and engaging research.
ReplyDeleteI would like to write my research paper on how modern culture influences movies. Specifically on how certain animated Disney films are influenced by the time period they are created in. I would focus on about seven animated films that were created about ten years apart (I could limit the amount of movies I examine if needed). I decided that I would like to look at the following films: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Cinderella (1950), the Jungle Book (1967), the Rescuers (1977), the Little Mermaid (1987), the Finding Nemo (2003), and Frozen (2013). If this subject is too broad I could narrow it down to focus on one aspect of culture that influences these movies (such as American beliefs).
ReplyDeleteHi Olivia, This is good. I would stay focused on those films. Key to your research will be finding reputable, scholarly resources.
DeleteI would like to write my research paper on the early developed of the CIA, since after World War II the government recognized the need for a centralized intelligence organization. I would research the origins of the CIA as a direct result of WWII since there was a need for the State Department and War Department to cooperate better and adopt a more strategic view of operations. The CIA engages in research, development, and deployment of high-leverage technology for intelligence purposes. The CIA serves as an independent source of analysis on topics of concern and also works closely with other organizations in the Intelligence Community to ensure that the intelligence consumer receives the best intelligence possible. I would also discuss the priorities and strategies of the CIA, and the ways in which it coordinates the nation’s intelligence activities and national security. I want to narrow my paper into focusing on the effect WWII had on the government agency that lead to a government wide foreign intelligence system.
ReplyDeleteI would like to write my research paper on the prohibition. I intend to focus mainly on the organized crime that soon spread throughout American cities such as Chicago, Detroit, and New York. Though overall alcohol consumption decreased during this period, organized crime increased dramatically. Many simply couldn't eliminate alcohol from their lives and went to drastic measures in order to illegally acquire it. I would like to talk about major gangsters of the time like Al Capone, and look at conflicts between major gangs. Further, I will mention the overall success of the prohibition and the reasons for such a drastic government decision. This was a very controversial period of United States history that I am thirsty to learn about (pun intended).
ReplyDeleteGriffin, a good start, but this is really broad. Focus on one aspect of this (maybe you and Lilly can talk this over to decide who will focus on what).
DeleteI would like to write my research paper on American architecture and interior design, specifically focusing on the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. I would focus primarily on his lasting legacy on American architecture and design. There is plenty of information on his work and he had many different style periods throughout his career. Within these different periods, he had multiple apprentices that worked under him and much of their work clearly shows his influence. Walter Burley Griffin and Rudolph Schindler are among the many apprentices of Wright who became successful. By effectively using the next five weeks I will show Wright’s legacy in modern architecture and design through his own work and the work of his apprentices. I am hoping to study interior design in college so I am very excited to get started!
ReplyDeleteI would like to write my research paper on Muhammad Ali and how one man represented all dissent in America during the 1960's. I would go into his personal life that leads into his major political and public stances on America, including his refusal to be a part of the Vietnam War, his religious change to the Nation of Islam, and his strong Black Power views. His political life parallels with being one of the greatest athletes of all time in the boxing ring, making his journey one to delve into. I also want to discover how the black people of America accepted him as an aggressive speaker and maybe not the best representation of their civil rights. With all the commotion this man made throughout his decade, I can suffice plenty of information to create a research paper.
ReplyDeleteI would like to write my research paper on Al Capone and his contributions to both the illegal aspect of organized crime as well as his positive contributions to society during the 1920's and 30's. I would focus on his involvement in bootlegging and crime, hopefully exploring any changes of law enforcement caused by his actions. The main idea that I will focus on would be his positive contributions on American life, despite his infamous personality. His generous contributions to the poor immigrants of Chicago lead him to become a very controversial figure. From his interactions with Eliot Ness to the philanthropic personality he created, I believe there is enough information for me to create a solid argument for the positive contributions Alphonse Capone made on American life during the 1920's and 1930's.
ReplyDeleteGood.
DeleteI would like to write my research paper on Pearl Harbor, the attacks by the Japanese on an American naval base in Hawaii that prompted the U.S. to enter WWII. In writing this paper I will focus on the Japanese strategy and reasoning to launch such a preemptive strike and also the immediate reaction and steps taken towards quickly entering the Second World War. Many of us know the general event and its long lasting impact, however I plan to take an in depth look at actual attack and the a 48 hour window afterwards in which the United States made a historic stand. Researching such an important and historic event will provide me with plenty of information to write a paper on this topic.
ReplyDeleteI would like to write about General John Glover and his role in the American Revolution. He was one of George Washington's most trusted generals, and played an integral part in the Battle of Trenton. As he was from Marblehead, he had experience on the water and proved to have an expert understanding of military tactics (although they were not apparent to others at first). He was a completely self-made man, and used his fortune to aid the revolutionary cause.
ReplyDeleteAlthough he is not as well-known as many other generals from this time period, there is plenty of information about him, especially here in Marblehead. I might be able to talk to some men here in town that are a part of Glover's Regiment, and would be able to tell me the specifics of his tactics and role in particular battles. There is also an ample amount of literary resources about him and his connection to George Washington. I am very interested in the American Revolution, especially Marblehead's connection to it. Focusing on only General Glover's role in the Revolution should be able to narrow this topic down to a manageable size in the 5 week timeline.
I would like to write my research paper on the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War Two. More specifically I would like to focus on the famous "Raising the Flag of Iwo Jima" photograph taken by Joe Rosenthal. I would talk about the unlikely story of the raising of the flag and its importance to American culture. The photograph inspired a generation and still has a lasting legacy to today through many monuments, coinage, and pieces of literature.
ReplyDeleteWith the battle I would provide context on the preparation, the supposed strategic importance of the island, the battle itself, and the legacy of Iwo Jima. There is plenty of information available not only on the battle but also about the iconic image.
I would like to write my research paper on the development of the nuclear bomb in the U.S during the early 1940s. I would specifically focus on the Manhattan Project itself and its role it had on American Politics during the time. I would also go into some of the notable scientists working on the Manhattan Project and investigate some of their shady backgrounds. I would research the project's beginnings and I could also possibly research some of the immediate effects of the Manhattan Project. By researching this topic I feel as if I would gain a better understanding of the "nuclear world" and some of the nuclear problems facing todays world.
ReplyDeleteIn my research paper I would like to analyze the anti-conformist youth movement known as the Beat Generation, which was the transformation from a small group of Columbia students into the mass hippie movement of the 1960s. In my paper I would focus on the new ideals developed in the time period (i.e. experimentation, rejection of materialism, and liberation). I would like to contrast these ideals to those of the previous generation and create an essay that describes the differences between the two generations and the generational gap created. To do this the Vietnam War would have to briefly be noted and taken into account, however would not be a major part of my essay.
ReplyDeletePrimarily the essay uses the major ideals of the hippie movement in the Beat Generation to describe the generational gap between the two. Although this may seem like a large topic, it can be narrowed into three major differences between the two generations that are caused directly by the small organization of adolescents who began the Beat Generation. Having the broad spectrum of the entire hippie movement will provide me with ample information while focusing primarily on the actual Beat Generation portion of the movement will allow me to properly focus my essay to be possible to be completed in a 12-15 essay over the span of five weeks.
I would like to write my research paper on how the role and status of Asian-Americans has changed in the last century (from about 1900 to the present day). I intend to mainly focus on the evolution of the overall social status of Asian Americans due to changes in levels of education, opportunities for employment, and increase of interracial marriages; I may also briefly cover subjects such as the earliest Asian immigrant workers (their lives, their reasons for immigration, their roles in society), and also stereotypes of Asian Americans that exist in today’s society. I use the term “Asian American”, but I realize this is a group more diverse and vast than it sounds, therefore I intend to limit my research to the few largest groups of people of Asian descent in the United States to the Filipinos, the Chinese, the Japanese, the Koreans, the Indians, and to a lesser extent, the Vietnamese. Given the fact that I am Asian-American myself, I believe that I will research and write about this topic both truthfully and passionately.
ReplyDeleteGood start, Wenny. It's a big topic and I think you'll have to focus on one aspect of it. As you research, try to narrow this down.
DeleteI would like to write my research paper on the National Security Agency and how it has affected the American people and their differing views of the government. NSA surveillance has been a popular source of controversy and debate for the public since its establishment in 1952, however, the topic of government surveillance has been widely discussed since the 1800s (when the telegram was invented). I plan to discuss specific events where government surveillance drew a significant amount of negative attention, such as when the “Black Chamber” (the United States’ first peacetime cryptanalytic organization) persuaded the Western Union, the largest US telegram company, to allow government officials to monitor private communications passing through the company’s wires. Considering the amount of recent news involving the NSA and government surveillance, I will be able to find many sources of information regarding this topic.
ReplyDeleteGood start, Danielle.
DeleteI would like to write my research paper about the history of the Kentucky Derby. I'd focus on its many aspects such as traditions, fashion, betting, and the horses that have won the triple crown. I'd look at where the derby began, and how it has evolved throughout the years. Additionally, I'd research the history of Churchill Downs and how it came to be such an important place in the sport of stakes racing. It would be also interesting to look at where the jockeys come from and how the Derby unites very wealthy American thoroughbred owners with riders from different countries and backgrounds. It's my dream to attend the Derby so it would be very interesting to study it.
ReplyDeleteFor my paper I would like to research the evolution of media throughout American history, and how it has affected crime. More specifically, I would like to address how media has influenced the evolution of American serial killers. Within my paper I would focus on how media has developed and changed through society. I would highlight some of the more well-known serial killers and how their crime sprees were both covered by the media, and how the portrayal of serial killers in the media changed as media in society developed. Due to a well documented evolution of media through society, and a vast amount of information on historical American serial killers, I believe that I will be able to attain sufficient research and complete my paper within five weeks.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very big topic, Katie. I'm a little confused about it. Are you referring to how the media has covered random shootings around the country or do you mean serial killers like Manson? I'm not sure how the coverage changed? Aren't they always portrayed as deranged and inhuman in some way? Let's talk.
DeleteI would like to write my research paper about the Bay of Pigs and the CIA's botched attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro in Cuba. I would focus on what went wrong leading up to and during the mission. Furthermore, I would intend to examine the affect of the operation on not only Cuban-American relations, but also on the CIA and its future operations.
ReplyDeleteAfter checking the catalogs of several libraries, there appears to be a bevy of books available to me on the subject. As well, there are several documentaries and other media sources that could be consulted in my research. With the large amount of information available, I am confident that I would be able to remain focused and occupied throughout the next five weeks in the process of researching and writing on this topic.
Good.
DeleteI would like to write my research paper about America's effort to attract foreign scientists from Axis powers, such as Enrico Fermi from Italy and Niels Bohr from Denmark to work on the Manhattan Project. I would research how the U.S. worked to persuade these people to leave their home nation, why they did eventually decide to leave, and the role they played in changing the view that Americans had of immigrants from these nations. I would also research how and if the U.S. still works to attract foreign scientists today. Despite how specific my topic is, I feel that I will be able to find more than enough information to write a comprehensive research paper.
ReplyDeleteExcellent!
DeleteI would like to argue that General Douglass MacArthur should not have been removed from command in the Korean War. I would investigate his prior accomplishments, accolades and credentials that would have led up to his decision. I would examine the immediate and long term repercussions of the decision to unify the Korean Peninsula under one government as well as how the world would benefit from a united Korea as well as how it would have benefited in past circumstances, such as the stalemate with China that persisted under Mao Zedong's reign in China. I realize that there is a large amount of hypothetical situations but I will find a way to work around them.
ReplyDeleteSounds good, Alex.
DeleteI would like to write my research paper about the rise and fall of Salem as a maritime city. In regards to the rise, I will include certain aspects such as the Spice Trade and profile key participants such as Nathaniel Bowditch, a pioneer in navigation, and Elias Hasket Derby, one of the first merchant princes. In regards to the fall, I will include the emergence of big cities, westward expansion, and the effects of the War of 1812. I realize that there are many more details concerning this topic. However, I aim to further narrow my focus on the most important and/or interesting factors.
ReplyDeleteSounds good, Conrad.
DeleteFor my research paper, I would like to study the education of African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement. I would primarily focus on the Little Rock Nine and their difficult transition into an all white high school. During this time, there were significant court cases, such as Brown v. Board of Education, and organizations like the NAACP that contributed to the integration of African Americans into white schools throughout the country. I would examine how from struggle, came a small victory for African Americans and the different view points of white students versus African American students.
ReplyDeleteThere are an ample amount of resources on this topic. Some of the Little Rock Nine are still alive, so it will be interesting to see how they view education today. I am eager to find out more about this topic, especially since it was a turning point for the education system in the United States. I will have more then enough information on this topic and 5 weeks is a reasonable amount of time in order to create an essay that I am satisfied with. Can't wait to start researching!
Good start, Grace.
DeleteFor my research topic I would like to write about the Cuban Missile Crisis. Specifically I would like to focus on the threat of Nuclear warfare and how this affected Kennedy's reaction to the problem. Also I would like to write about how the Cuban Missile Crisis fits in with the rest of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. Furthermore, I am interested to research the current trade embargo with Cuba. Cuba is one of the closest countries to the United States yet we have no relationship with Cuba. I hope that this research will help me to better understand why this is, There is so much information about this topic available that I do not think it will be a problem to find twelve sources or write 12-15 pages on the subject. I think that I will be able to complete this paper within the 5 weeks and am excited to start researching.
ReplyDeleteFor my research topic, I would write about the American counter-intelligence initiative leading up to D-Day and its effects on the invasion and the war itself. I would specifically focus on Operation Fortitude, which spearheaded the campaign to fool the German high command that allied forces were going to invade mainland Europe from another location, not Normandy. Specific strategies which I could cover include the controlled leak of false information, as well as Patton's famous "Ghost Army" in which thousands of inflatable munitions, vehicles, soldiers, and supplies were deployed to mislead German spy planes flying over British military bases. I would also examine the outcome of this strategy for both the allied and the axis powers, as well as how it affected the outcome of World War II. I have found an entire History Channel documentary on the subject, as well as numerous online sources, so I believe that this topic can be easily researchable if I keep my scope specific enough.
ReplyDeleteI would like to write my research paper about the United States’ decision to drop the atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I will attempt to determine if weather or not Truman was right to drop the bomb. To answer this question I will not only investigate the eventual fallout from the bombs, but I will aslo examine the information available to the United States at the time.
ReplyDeleteThis question covers a lot of ground as I will be investigating two outcomes, on ethat happened and one that could have happened. I think I could get it done in 5 weeks but do the question justice I may have to refine my topic a bit, or even pick a new one altogether, both of which are options I have no problem with pursuing.
Good idea Chris! I like where you're going with this:)
DeleteHi Chris, This is a well-tread path. I think it will work, but try to find an angle that is not the same old "had to save American lives" thesis.
DeleteFor my research paper, I would like to write about US operations in Latin America during the Cold War. First, I would focus on how the operations were executed by the government. Then I would focus on the effect the operations have had on international relations with Latin American countries today. Specifically, how the United States propped up brutal dictatorships and military regimes to stop the spread of communism, and the effect that has had on the United States reputation with Latin America. This would also include the involvement of the CIA in Latin America. This topic is broad, so I likely will limit my focus to one or two different countries. I will either focus on Guatemala, which likely would also involve the influence of US corporations in Latin America, and/or Nicaragua and the US support for the terrible rebel group the Contras and the Iran-Contra affair, and/or Chile, and the US involvement in the replacement of democracy with a military dictatorship. I am sure that I will be able to find plenty of information in five weeks to write my research paper.
ReplyDeleteSounds good, Ben.
DeleteFor my research paper, I would like to focus on the 101st Airborne Division during World War II. Their key role in events such as Operation Market Garden, D-Day, and the Battle of the Bulge greatly influenced the success of the United States and the eventual victory of the Allies. There is extensive documentation on the division, most notably Stephen E. Ambrose's "Band of Brothers", which was made into a mini-series by HBO. The men of the 101st Airborne Division are true American heroes who altered the course of the war and valiantly served their country during World War II. World War II greatly interests me, and to view it through the eyes of the men who experienced it, as one does in "Band of Brothers", would yield a new understanding of the components of the war. The conflict that elevated the United States to its current position of global power was won largely due to the efforts of the 101st Airborne Division to keep America fighting during major events of the war. Researching these men would greatly interest me, and I believe I would also enjoy learning about how their actions influenced American strategy and decision-making for the remainder of the war and for future conflicts.
ReplyDeleteSounds good, Jack.
DeleteI would like to write about the origin of the Peace Corps for my research topic. I would discuss the original purpose of the Peace Corps, its international reputation and its effect on the United State's global image. I would research the evolution of the Peace Corps and analyze how it has changed over the years. I'm extremely interested in learning about JFK's motives behind the Peace Corp and if it represents today what he wished to have established during his presidency. I'm really excited to start researching this topic!!
ReplyDeleteThere is a great amount of resources dedicated to this topic and I have already found several that have been very insightful. I feel that there is definitely enough information to keep me busy for the next five weeks. There is definitely enough information to help me write a 12-15 page paper.
Excellent!
DeleteI would like to write my research on how the music of the 1960s-1970s was influenced by the war in Vietnam and the Civil Rights Movement in the U.S. A lot of music that we refer to today as Rock and Roll came about through protest of the war in Vietnam and the U.S.’s role in the war as well as the growing Civil Rights Movement in the United States. Woodstock was a major component of the Counterculture movement in the U.S. which would be referenced in regard to the music of the period and its influence on the movement but the movement would not be explored in great detail. The music of Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Aretha Franklin and the Beatles had a great impact on the United States and I plan to research the impact that that music has on society today as well.
ReplyDeleteThe music of the 1960s-1970s is still influential today and I think that it would make for a great research paper. There are a great deal of articles and other sources exploring this topic and the impact of this era along with the music of the era and films (such as Forest Gump) that utilize this music as a storytelling device. My paper would focus on the impact of this music on the 1960s-1970s culture and in 21st century culture and the reasons for its creation (Vietnam War, Civil Rights).
Sounds good, Alex.
DeleteI would like to write my research paper on the evolution of yacht and ship design. The primary focus of the paper will be on how certain aspects of designs have evolved. I will discuss the influence of how technology and new building materials have changed designs and how designs have become more effective. I will include how different designs are beneficial for certain uses and industries. This research paper will include how racing, cruising, and commercial vessels have evolved in each of these areas. In addition, I will touch upon how design in the American Navy has progressed over time, as well as the designs in the Americas Cup. Given that Marblehead has such a strong history in the area of naval heritage, I think that this will be a very interesting and relatable topic to study.
ReplyDeleteI would like to write my research paper on the changing role of women in the 1920s. I will specifically focus on flapper girls: women who cut their hair short, wore shorter skirts than socially acceptable at the time, smoked and went against the traditional behavior of women. I will also talk about the cause and effect of flapper girls. By this I mean that I plan to research how and why this change in the behavior came about as well as people's response to the change. I will go in depth about what the flapper girls represented, valued and their actions. (There is more that I will probably add but I'm blanking right now)
ReplyDeleteGood start, Eva.
DeleteI would like to write my research paper on the origins of Manhattan Project and how it changed modern warfare. I will discuss the background of the Project (what it was, why it was kept secret, etc). I plan to discuss how it impacted international warfare. This topic is important because it forever changed how wars were fought (or could be fought), with the introduction of nuclear weapons.
ReplyDeleteThere are numerous sources I can use to assist me in gathering information. There are online databases I can use, government websites, and I can utilize print sources from MHS and Abbott Libraries.
Sounds good, Darby.
DeleteI would like to write my research paper on the Iranian hostage crisis. I would discuss how it doomed the presidency of Jimmy Carter in the 1980 presidential election against Reagan. I would look deeper into the origins of anti-American sentiment in Iran and the motives of the Iranian students who took the hostages along with failed US missions to save the hostages and the successful "Canadian Caper" mission where the CIA teamed up with Canada to sneak six American diplomats out of Iran by pretending to scout for an appropriate location to stage their science-fiction film "Argo". I then would include the aftermath and how the crisis effected the United States and foreign policy.
ReplyDeleteSounds good, Maddie.
DeleteI would like to write my research paper on the US Army's liberation of concentration camps in early 1945. I will focus on the reactions of the soldiers who first encountered the camps, especially generals Patton and Eisenhower. To narrow the focus I would research the discovery of certain camps such as Buchenwald and Dachau, and the specific army divisions that liberated the camps. I would also discuss the reaction of both the Americans who toured the camps and those who received the reports at home, and how this reaction affected the treatment of the Germans after the war.
ReplyDeleteIt was the American soldiers who first discovered the horrifying conditions of the camps, and showed the rest of the world the evil that the Nazis were capable of. There are many recorded accounts of these events both from soldiers who saw the horror firsthand and from survivors who were rescued by these soldiers.
Sounds good, Peter.
DeleteI plan on analyzing the influence the Black Panther Party had on the Civil Rights movement. I want to take into account the starkly contrasting opinions on the Black Panthers and the Black Power movement in order to determine the positive and negative effects on society. I would like to also examine the rift that developed between many African-Americans over how to address discrimination, mainly the split between peaceful ideologies and attempts to forcefully gain equal rights. Overall, I look to focus on the causes and effects of the Black Panthers.
